Living Prairie Museum is a unique urban nature preserve that protects endangered tall grass prairie. Join us to learn more about caring for this beautiful and unique site, and about conserving Winnipeg’s prairie legacy. We'll discuss caring for the prairie, including the challenges of a dynamic and rare ecosystem facing many threats. Less than 1% of this incredibly diverse ecosystem still remains in Manitoba. We will review some of Living Prairie Museum’s prairie restoration and plant propagation projects, including work recently supported by Nature Manitoba. We also discuss how to help build and support prairie within the city.
Marika Olynyk is the Curator of Living Prairie Museum with the City of Winnipeg’s Natural Services Branch. An environmental educator and ecologist, she has worked in education and outreach with Parks Canada, Nature Conservancy of Canada, and Alberta Parks. She holds a Master’s degree in Natural Resources Management, and has worked extensively on prairie ecology, including pollination and avian studies, and land management planning. A Nature Manitoba board member since 2019, Marika also sits on the Steering Committees for two Nature Manitoba partner programs: Important Bird Areas Program and Bridging the Gap Program.
Josh Pearlman is a Technical Assistant and acting Education Coordinator with the City of Winnipeg's Naturalist Services Branch. His educational background includes programs in landscape design, environmental studies and botanical science. For over fifteen years he has been fortunate to work in roles that combine habitat conservation and public education around the tall grass prairie and boreal forest ecosystems of Manitoba.
