This is your chance to get a start on your winter list. We hope to see lingering waterfowl, such as Long-tailed Duck and Harlequin Duck, or rare gulls. Meet at the Seven Sisters dam at 9 a.m. Winnipeggers can carpool, leaving from the Safeway parking lot at the southeast corner of Henderson Hwy. and Chief Peguis at 7:45.

An introduction to zebra mussels as an aquatic invasive species, touching on their biology, ecology, and distribution. The focus will then turn to their invasion history in North America, and, Manitoba and in closing talking about prevention, mitigation, and eradication (it’s not good news).

Dr. Hasler is a full professor and acting chair of biology at the University of Winnipeg. His research program encompasses fish biology and aquatic conservation and is supported by provincial and national grants. He has co-edited two books and written nearly 100 peer-reviewed journal articles. He completed graduate work at Queen’s University and Carleton University, and prior to moving to Winnipeg in 2017, was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Illinois – Urbana/Champaign.

This is a great opportunity to see some wintering birds in the city. Join tens of thousands of other birders across North America in this event and help contribute to our knowledge of winter bird distribution. Novice birders will be placed with more experienced birders.
