Many of us garden to enjoy the foods or fruits of our labours, and to have beautiful blooms to admire that attract pollinators.  But the Living Prairie Museum’s native plant plots are designed with one purpose in mind - to go to seed! 

Begun several years ago, on a previously disturbed site along the northeastern edge of the Living Prairie Museum (LPM), the project was completed this fall.  Thirty-seven species of native tall grass prairie wildflowers (or forbs) have been planted and many seeds have already been harvested.

Nature Manitoba established a modest scholarship fund several years ago in 1983 at the University of Manitoba to support annually a graduate student in Biological Sciences.

In the catalogue of scholarships on the U of M website our scholarship is currently described as: “ Awarded to a student who has graduated from a University in Manitoba and who, in the following September either enters or continues with a graduate program in Biological Sciences.”

The Bridging the Gap Program is thrilled to introduce our new co-coordinator Britt Ross.

Manitoba Fall Hawk Watch – 7 September 2024

Group 1. Luc Blanchette and Al Schritt

Luc and Al spent their time at Holo Crossing (also known at Windygates, in the Pembina Valley). Their eleven species of raptors was the highest of all the groups.

Group 2. Betty Loewen

At the south end of one runway at the Winnipeg International Airport, on Silver Avenue and the Yellow Ribbon Greenway Trail, members of the St. James Horticultural Society (SJHS) have been cultivating garden plots since 1938.  The Society itself is the second oldest horticultural society in Manitoba, organized by thirteen neighbourhood gardeners in 1914.

2024!  An even more successful garden tour than the year before.   The garden tour went incredibly well, twelve gardens located in Osborne Village, St. Boniface and St. Vital. All gardens varied but were all revered for their distinctive qualities. Eight of the twelve gardens were brand new, never on a garden tour and the four gardens that had been on tour in the past were all incredibly unique and well worth seeing again. Two of the twelve gardens were dedicated seniors whose gardens were notably remarkable!
